The first two are self-evident, but when it comes to the writing, Max Payne's whole shtick is that it's this over the top noir pastiche, and as someone who's actually both watched many noir films and read a lot of hardboiled crime fiction, Rockstar's writing is waaaaay more genre accurate. The shooting mechanics are so much more refined, the physics and damage system is incredible, and the writing itself is so much better. I think people are biased due to nostalgia too because it's hard for me to imagine how anyone can play 3 after 1 and 2 and come away thinking it's the lesser game. Its mechanics are rewarding enough to progress through the story and who doesn't like ex-cops who drink heavily and save the world, right? Still, if you're looking for an enjoyable third-person shooter to kill time with ( pun much intended ) I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It feels great to once again join Max on yet another crusade and blast our way through Brazille raining hell like in the old days. There is almost no breathing room with this type of atmosphere and it shows throughout the story. It reaches gargantuan levels of cheesiness, Max just delivers depressing line one after the another. The dialogue is one if not the most frustrating part of the plot. They are not mandatory so we can just ignore them completely and focus on shooting. Some of them feature easter egg with references to past games the other ones can play out throughout the entire game. With some explanations to what's happening around us. It's this second type that I find the most interesting as it provides us You can find golden guns parts to shoot with even more style or "clues" scattered around the levels themselves. Of course, it's still immensely satisfying to use and the game provides us with a couple of sections where Max moves by himself we can shine executing the baddies in slow motion. On higher difficulties not only is it more difficult to gain it, wisely managing it is extremely important.
On lower difficulties where Max is a literal death angel, there is almost no limit in the number of times you can slow down time and jump just to get that glorious headshot. Bullet Time is the most precious resource at our disposal. Our protagonist is ready to dive like an Olympic medalist. No matter what kind of weapon you're holding You can combine any two kinds of light pistols to dual wield them which is a good solution. Max canĬarry up to three pieces of weaponry, two light and one heavy. There is a considerable amount of weapons from all kinds of pistols to the obvious heavy weapons such as rocket launchers or sniper rifles. He just shoots bad guys, drinks alcohol and eats pills, that's his job, right? Speaking of shooting, weapon system, as well as bullet time, are fun to play around. Rockstar decided to fully immerse us into the character of Max who has no idea what's going on most of the time. The plot itself is overcomplicated to say at least. Two chapters that happen in favelas are in my opinion the most frustrating ones to beat and I hate them with all my heart. The second act is, in my opinion, the worst when it comes to pacing. The game features 14 chapters but I feel like it could've been shorter. It takes merely a couple of minutes and we're back jumping around eating tons of painkillers and enjoying juicy kill-cams. Nine years after the second game we rejoin Max who is currently working as a private bodyguard in Sao Paulo. Having just finished Max Payne 3 campaign I decided to round up my thoughts about it.
